office servants.
Taking everything into considera-
tion it was suggested that between seven hundred and
pounds and seven hundred and fifty pounds a year
would fairly represent the cost that would fall on
the Colony were the new Registry to be part of its
establishment, especially as there would be pension
allowances accruing.
As Mr. Secretary Harcourt is aware, the Hong
Kong Government intimated a preference for making a
money contribution towards the cost of the establish-
ment of the new Registry rather than stationing a
Hong Kong official at Shanghai to deal with the work
there.
In June last therefore Sir J. Jordan forwarded
to this Office a memorandum drawn up by His Majesty's
Consul-General at Shanghai on the subject of the re-
muneration of the Consular officers under the proposed
Order in Council in respect of the extra work which
